In 1962 Mr Tom Birch of Fleetwood was approached by the Thornton Cleveleys Urban District Council to form a local youth brass band. Mr Birch A.R.C.M (T), a former instructor at Kneller Hall School of Music, advertised in the local press and with 12 youngsters began the revival of Thornton Cleveleys Band.
The council provided an old civil defence hut at the rear of the council offices as a rehearsal room. Instruments left from the former band were in a poor state and required renewals and repairs. The youngsters played carols that year and in 1963 a parents committee was formed. A council grant along with dedicated fund raising by the parents committee eventually enabled the band to purchase instruments and uniforms.
In May 1963 the band proudly displayed their new Maroon and Grey uniforms at the Civic Sunday parade then in June they led the Thornton Cleveleys Gala for the first time. Many concerts and marches followed for local schools, churches and garden parties.
Several young members were accepted to join Lancashire County Youth Brass Band and by the end of 1963 the band had 26 players. With their successful concerts and hard work for from their tutor Mr Birch the youngsters abilities and confidence grew. The band began contesting in 1964 with many successes resulting.
1972 saw the opening of the new Band room on Holly Road, Red Marsh Thornton and is where the band still rehearses today.
In 1997 the band were awarded a £53,000 lottery grant which was used to buy many new instruments.
The band is always keen to welcome newcomers of all ages. We have a busy concert programme throughout the year and currently contest in the 3rd section. (see Events page).
